These questions and answers are designed to honestly educate potential customers allowing them to make better choices. Before making any decision to change your horse feed to Kool & Kalm, please seek out and talk to people using the feed and ask them directly what they think and why they use it and would never change. Kool & Kalm sales are growing because of results and only results, and that’s the way we planned it.

  • How much does it cost?

Compared to a cheap sweet feed or HORSE AND MULE PELLETS, your extra investment should be less that $170 per year per horse! THAT’S ALL. But it gets better than that, you don’t need any supplements or top dress vitamin/mineral packs, Kool & Kalm is a complete feed when fed with good quality hay.

  • How is Kool & Kalm so different?

Both a “T” Model Ford and a 2007 Ferrari are made from metals (ingredients) but they are very different. The “T” Model is ancient technology, the Ferrari is “State of the Art” cutting edge technology. Kool & Kalm is just the same. The ingredients are much the same as ancient technology, but the manufacturing technology is “State of the Art”. The amazing formulation and processing is 21st Century. Virtually all feed companies use grains covered in molasses or pelleted raw ingredients including starch, and that technology has been around for many years, it’s old thinking with old results. The concept Kool & Kalm addresses is quite simple actually. We designed a horse feed that would give horses all the energy they needed to grow up, thrive, then undertake the tasks we require them to do. But we have focussed on not making any more systemic impact than grass. The problems that afflict the American herd of horses just seem to go away when they are fed Kool & Kalm.

  • What are the ingredients?

Alfalfa, Corn, Rice Bran, Soybean Meal, Dicalcium Phosphate, Magnesium Limestone, Diatomaceous Earth (an inert carrier and anti-caking agent), Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Monocalcium Phosphate, Forage By Products, Dried Kelp Meal, Manganese Amino Acid Complex, Zinc Amino Acid Complex, DL-Methionine, Biotin Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Amino Acid Cyomplex, L-Lysine Monohydrochloride, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid, Niacin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Yucca Schidegera Extract, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, D-Activated Animal Sterol, (A source of D3 activity), Ferrous Carbonate, Cobalt Carbonate, Ethylenediamine Dihydroiodide and Folic Acid.

  • So what is this “State of the Art” technology?

The production technology used to create Kool & Kalm is called “Wet Steam Extrusion”.The extrusion process is very different to traditional pelleting, and offers several distinct advantages over ancient traditional methods. During the extrusion process, the ingredients are mixed, ground finely, and pre-cooked (conditioned) with wet steam at about 220 degrees, for a very short period of time. The pre-cooked mixture is fed into the extruder where the final cook occurs, and the mixture is forced through a die to determine the final shape and size. The heat from the friction and steam breaks down chemical bonds to make the feed more water soluble. Water solubility makes the feed easily digestible, and makes certain nutrients more available to the horse.

  • If this technology is so good why doesn’t everyone use it?

Price. The simple fact is that most companies find the cost of extrusion prohibitive compared to pelleting and coating grains with molasses.(sweet feed) One of the problems companies don’t like is the fact that there is “shrink”. It takes about 5% more raw ingredients to make the product than the end weight. Water is lost in the drying phase and not replaced. You do not pay for water. We are not a huge multi-national company with massive overheads. We don’t give away feed to get product endorsements, or have a massive advertising budget. Most companies tout endorsements from personalities, and well known and respected ranches and breeding facilities. To get these endorsements companies either pay money or supply feed at no or deeply discounted prices. We do not. The person who ends up paying for the endorsements and free feed is you the customer. People who endorse Kool & Kalm do so because they are passionate about the results they get and are happy to tell others. We do not, and will not ever buy endorsements, we just don’t need to, Kool & Kalm is that good.

  • How does Extrusion affect major nutrients?

Protein. The extrusion process breaks down (or denatures) the primary bond holding the chain of amino acids together. The heat of extrusion also denatures undesirable compounds such as urease and the trypsin inhibitor present in raw soybeans.

Carbohydrates. The utilization of carbohydrates (starches) is greatly improved by the extrusion process. As starch is extruded, it is gelatinized and as it leaves the extruder, it expands. Once the starch granule is gelatinized, it becomes water soluble, and it cannot revert to it’s original form. The most important effect of cooking starches is to make them readily absorbed in the small intestine as glucose. This ready absorption means fewer soluble carbohydrates are carried to the cecum, where bacterial fermentation might take place. This can have a significant impact on the incidence of gaseous colic caused by carbohydrate overload in the hindgut.

Fat. During the extrusion process, oil from soybeans and other raw ingredients is released from the seed cell, making the fat more available for absorption. The small amount of oil in Kool & Kalm helps fulfill fatty acid requirements.

Fiber. The effect of extrusion on fiber is related to bulk density. Due to the mechanical action of grinding up the raw ingredients, the hollow structures of fibrous materials are crushed changing their bulk density, and making the fiber more easily accessible to microbes in the hindgut. The expansion of extruded feed cause horses to eat and chew more slowly, promoting increased salivation, improved digestion, and fewer digestive disturbances.

  • Isn’t that too much protein?

It’s a shame that people have been educated to make feeding decisions based on the crude protein analysis of feeds, they don’t really have much to do with the performance of the ration. Crude protein analysis is a measure of the nitrogen evolved during testing of a specific sample of the feed. The test has nothing to do with the quality or source of the protein, chicken feathers test just the same as the highest quality protein available. When asked what protein is actually, most people don’t know, but they base their feed decisions on the programmed response that you have 10% for this type of horse and 12% for that type of horse, etc. This type of purchase criteria is great for companies making 10% and 12% and 14% feed, they just subscribe to consumer demand. Trouble is they have educated the consumer to believe they are making an informed choice. Think again, LEARN ABOUT PROTEIN. We use the best plant based protein sources we can get to nourish a horses body, support growth and muscle rebuilding, and feed intestinal microbes that undertake feed conversion. Please ask horse owners that feed Kool & Kalm who is right and who is misleading. You can’t argue with incredible results, and we have lots of them!

  • Why is there so little fat?

Horses are grass eaters, and Kool & Kalm is designed to mimic the digestive response a horses system has to grass. Doesn’t that make sense? Studies on humans and animals around the World for many years, have unanimously concluded that a high fat diet is bad for health. Necessary fats have been identified and are beneficial, but large quantities have been proven over and over again to be detrimental. The fat in Kool & Kalm is naturally derived primarily from soybean meal, there is no added fats or oils. The quantity of fat present can be digested in your horses small intestine without difficulty. The addition of oil (fat) to horse feeds coincided with a huge swing to soybean production in the 1980’s. All of a sudden horse feed manufacturers had a comparatively inexpensive source of calories, and it made good economic sense for feed companies to educate people to believe that a high fat diet was good for horses. We totally disagree. Once again, please ask horse owners about the results they get when their horses eat Kool & Kalm.

  • What does “Kool & Kalm” mean?

Kool refers to the low heat of digestion of the feed. The processing or predigestion of Kool & Kalm promote digestion in the small intestine using enzymes and other digestive juices, but free of fermentation, this results in less heat being produced during energy production. The fiber component is digested out in the cecum and large intestine, just as it should be. Internal heat must be dissipated by blood circulation taking the heat to the skin surface and being released into the atmosphere.

The Kalm part of the name refers to the effects the vitamin and mineral pack supports. The vitamin and mineral profile in Kool & Kalm was not initially developed for horses, but was the product of research into natural help for ADHD children. By supplying finely tuned balances of minerals and special sugars, vastly improved grades were observed in the test children. The same benefits have been observed in horses. More intent focus, better training retention and improved attitude are results Kool and Kalm supports.

  • What if my horse is prone to colic?

From extensive testing came the revelation that this feed substantially reduces or negates the problems associated with feed related colic. Because Kool & Kalm is highly digestible it promotes normal gut function and that in turn means upsets are at a minimum. There are many causes of colic, but the most common is feed related episodes. To the best of our knowledge, at the time of writing, not one case of colic has be attributed to Kool & Kalm.

  • Will my horse become easier to handle?

Within several weeks you will notice an improvement in the general attitude of your horse, a calmness will develop you may have never seen before, making your horse far easier to handle.  In the herd
Another benefit is the general demeanor of horses interacting with the herd they live in. The dominant herd leader will settle and not be nearly as aggressive in maintaining the leadership. Your horses will be far less marked and scarred by constant biting. Herd harmony will reach new levels and segregation will not be necessary like it has been in the past.

  • I am a trainer how will it help me?

A calm mind is a mind that is far more receptive to new ideas and training. No explanation is necessary as to the advantages of a horse that willingly encompasses new training concepts. Horses focus more intently, are less easily spooked, work better in unfamiliar environments, and display enviable temperament traits commonly associated with winners at all levels of competition. Kool & Kalm will not alter the effects of pain based training.

  • I have performance horses, will they perform better?

Superior nutrition is a key to superior performance. Horses and indeed humans perform any task better when they are calm and focused. Correct balancing of necessary nutrients, and the easy availability of energy contribute to the vastly improved performance of horses on this feed. Extreme digestibility, gelatinized starches, high Total Digestive Nutrient index, and the most advanced combination and ratios of essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids, ensure the very best performance your horse is capable of.

  • Laminitis, will this help?

Laminitis effects the horse long before it causes any rotation of the coffin bone. Sub-clinical laminitis is the hidden cause of many performance problems, not developed enough to display noticeable on X-ray, yet when the horse is pushed to higher levels of exertion they feel very tender. The laminae of the hoof is part of the movement system. The hoof transfers the dynamic loads of the horses mass and muscular propulsion to the ground. If they are not in perfect working order, performance suffers.

  • How long before I see any changes?

Some users notice changes occurring in days, some in weeks and all within a month. Substantial improvement can be expected within 45 day’s and your horse will just keep getting better with more time. This especially applies to the extremities like hoofs. The hoof may begin growing a different and more correct shape, and also the speed of hoof growth may increase. The hoof may be more elastic and more able to accept the dynamic loading placed upon it when the horse is working hard. At the same time it may become more resilient, and embrittlement that causes flaking, splitting and chipping may diminish. In many cases, after several months feeding K&K, shoes may become very optional!

  • Are there other benefits?

LESS HAY CONSUMED. One of the most amazing technologies employed in the production of this feed is the intestinal bacteria flora manipulation. Using an innovative technique, we are able to promote the suppression of undesirable protozoa in the hind gut, and that allows the desirable bacteria that process the complex carbohydrates (cellulose from grasses and other fiber) to flourish. This could make your horse a more efficient user of expensive hay, and that has to be a plus when round and square bales are running at an all time record price.

A NOTICEABLE DECREASE IN DROPPING QUANTITY
Because there are no useless fillers included in this feed, what you put in your horse, stay’s in your horse. After only a week or so you will see the quantity of fecal matter start to decrease. This can be up to the order of 30% less manure. Really, the manure is your money getting turned into waste, the less manure the less money you are wasting. This is something that is very measurable, and affects your wallet every week.
